Sunny and HOT. Really, really hot. Emily and I stopped by one of our favorite places the other day to check out this year’s sunflower crop. Wow! Skelly’s in Janesville has really expanded their sunflower field from one acre last year to six this year– so big that you need a map to get around! https://www.skellysfarmmarket.com/sunflowers/
It’s a beautiful sight, but if you can, go later in the day. Our schedule was so that Emily and I had to be there around five, but even then the sun was so intense and with the flowers out in the field, shade is hard to come by. We thought about walking between some of the rows of sunflowers when we were picking them, but there were A LOT of bees too! So….. we stuck to the open areas! While we didn’t stay too long, it was enough time to take in the beauty, pick a few to take home, and stop by the Skelly store for some apple and strawberry donuts for the road. If you’re ever on the Illinois/Wisconsin line, Skelly’s in Janesville is a fun place to make a pit stop. We were there in June for strawberry picking, this week for sunflowers and maybe we will head back in the fall too. With these scorching temperatures lately, fall sounds pretty good to me.
